Some Simple Steps to Make Workplace Wellbeing More Open, Accessible & Everyone’s Responsibility

More and more people feel comfortable talking about their mental health. More can always be done. We really are only at the beginning of the journey. If the past 2 years have taught us anything, it’s that our wellbeing should be prioritised in the good and the tough times.

How do organisations best support their people? How do you build a workplace that truly supports the wellbeing of your people? This preventative approach is at the core of what we do at The Conscious Workplace. Here’s what we recommend you do:

Getting Your Foundation Right

We want to move people from being ‘reactive’ in isolation, to a focus on prevention. Many companies see workplace wellbeing as a collection of programmes owned by Human Resources. This approach can be costly and time consuming with little long lasting impact.

Our first objective is to build a strong mental health and wellbeing foundation. It’s the cornerstone of good prevention. With this focus, we help minimise the instances of poor mental health. We can also help you to facilitate early help-seeking and support recovery and return-to-work.

The Role Your Leaders Can Play

For leadership teams, we provide training, support and 1-to-1 sessions that help leaders to better understand and support their teams. A key outcome is an increased awareness of how people within organisations are feeling day to day. So even when people do struggle with their mental health, you’re more likely to hear about it and more able to support.

Recent research by Glassdoor also highlighted the importance of clear and frequent communication. This is particularly key right now, with uncertainty around the return to the office. Ensuring communication is open and timely will improve the wellbeing of your teams.

How to Help Your Teams to Take Ownership of Their Own Wellbeing

Simple, actionable techniques that support wellbeing is a win-win for everyone. If you support the wellbeing of your teams, those individuals will be more effective. Research from Deloitte saw an average £5 return for every £1 invested.

One programme we run, (particularly effective when supporting shift workers), is our Sleep Management Course. We focus on scientifically proven techniques to help people begin each day feeling refreshed, restored and ready for the day.

We also offer Financial Wellbeing Guidance to help people deal with money worries and other financial topics. Having a plan around elements such as budgeting and debt management, not only build financial resilience, they also help people get a better night’s sleep.

It’s a big journey, and it’s exciting to see the focus continue to increase!
